Virtual Discussion Group ‘’Philosophy & Cosmology’’ #1
Name of presenter: Dr. Gennady Chitov
Title of presentation: Dark Universe, Neutrino, and Fine Tuning
Date and time: Wednesday, October 28th, 2020
Zoom link: laurentian.zoom.us/j/91808556392

Abstract: I will present a general non-specialized introduction to the problem of fine-tuning
as a set of constraints and requirements the fundamental constants of our Universe
must satisfy in order to sustain complex structures, one of each is life. Closely related
problem of uniqueness of our Universe (i.e. Universe or Multiverse) will be discussed
as well. Our recent work on neutrino mass and the dark sector of the Universe will be
presented in the context of fine-tuning.

Aristotle’s Cosmology
Paolo Biondi (Philosophy, University of Sudbury)

Abstract: Building upon the initial theories proposed by his Ancient Greek predecessors, Aristotle’s theory of the universe solidified the picture of a geocentric, spherical, and finite universe. This lecture will describe, and briefly explain, a number of key Aristotelian elements of his theory, such as, the division of a spherical cosmos into two distinct regions, the sublunary and superlunary; two corresponding kinds of fundamental matter, corruptible and incorruptible, each found within its respective region; natural motions and natural places for every entity; the soul as the source of life and principle of living beings; the celestial bodies and spheres moved by ‘divine’ intellects; and the impossibility of any void. The intent of the presentation is to offer a glimpse into the Aristotelian cosmology that, together with the Ptolemaic astronomy, dominated the minds of Western thinkers for more than a millennium.

Gilles Deleuze: Exploring the Quantum Void and C(hao)osmic Fractals
Alain Beaulieu (Philosophy, Laurentian University)

Abstract: Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995) is one of the rare contemporary philosophers who demonstrated sensitivity to cosmological issues. He was well aware of the new cosmological theories of his time and integrated cosmological questioning in his thinking. Some of his ideas could potentially become useful to develop new cosmological hypotheses. This presentation indicates points of convergence between Deleuze’s philosophy and cosmological ideas; more specifically, regarding the thermal death of the universe, the quantum void, cosmic fractals, and the chaotic universe. The presentation discusses Deleuze in connection with theories elaborated such scientists as Boltzmann, Prigogine, Mandelbrot and Poincaré.
